If You Can't Beat'em Join'em

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

Oh, how I can remember the days when my husband, Henry, would leave me home alone every weekend to go hunting. I would visit friends and family during the weekends and everyone would ask, “Where is Henry?” It was a broken record of me saying, “He is out hunting.” I would get tired of them asking me that every weekend. Lol… I wasn’t much of an outdoors kind of girl at that time. I liked going shopping, to the movies, and just going out enjoying myself. I remember some days hoping that it would rain, so he would have no choice but to stay home with me. Boy, was I wrong! The rain didn’t stop him from getting out in the woods.

One day Henry said, “Lakeisha come turkey hunting with me. All you have to do is sit and film me, that’s it.” I was hesitant, but curious at the same time. I wanted to see what all the hype was about. What was so interesting about turkey hunting that kept him in the woods? I decided to take him up on his offer. We headed to the woods and set up turkey decoys and our camera. He began to call with a mouth call and box call. I thought that was pretty neat. A few minutes later we heard gobbling. He called a little more, and the turkey gobbled again. It was so exciting! A few moments later the turkey came gobbling into our setup. BOOM! Henry took the shot. I couldn’t believe what had just happened! It was so exciting to see him calling a turkey and the turkey responding back. It was the coolest thing ever!

After that hunt, Henry told me, “Next time you are going to take the shot.” My first turkey kill was a double that we pulled off together. We even had our baby girl Trinity with us and I was five months pregnant! I've been hooked ever since! Nothing can keep me out of the woods now! I never knew what I was missing because I was trying to get him stay home instead of opening my eyes and mind to a whole new experience. It’s more than just the kill, it’s about making lifetime memories and providing food for your family. Sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone and try something new!
